Who is the Holy Spirit?
- The Holy Spirit is our guide we can do nothing without Him.
- The Holy Spirit is God and part of the TRINITY of God. That is; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit
The history of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit was on earth during creation and He never left
Genesis 1:2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters
Before Jesus was born, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit had not been revealed but they were involved in what God was doing with humans. Old testament experiences show them in action
Evidence of God the Son getting involved with us in the Old Testament
1. Abraham talking to three men before the destruction of Sodom and Gommorah. When the two angels departed for Sodom, Abraham continued to address the person who remained with him as Lord.
Genesis 18:2 Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground. Verse 17 Then the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?
Genesis 19:1 Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening as Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.
2. Joshua when he was about to attack Jericho, he saw the Lord holding a sword!
Joshua 5:13-15 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”“Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” Then Joshua fell face down to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?” The commander of the LORD’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
3. Daniel was saved from being consumed in the fire by the Son of God. These were the words of king Nebuchadnezzar when he looked at where they had thrown Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.
Daniel 3:15 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”.
The above scriptures are among the most interesting writings about the Son of God in action before He was born in the flesh to redeem us from sin.
Evidence of the Holy Spirit in action in the Old Testament but through a selected few
The Holy Spirit was working through people in the Old Testament before Pentecost. See the following examples
Moses gathers and brings seventy elders to the presence of God to receive the Holy Spirit of God that was on him
Number 11:16-17 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Summon before me seventy of the leaders of Israel; bring them to the Tabernacle, to stand there with you. I will come down and talk with you there, and I will take of the Spirit which is on you and will put it upon them also; they shall bear the burden of the people along with you, so that you will not have the task alone
Same thing happens today, the presence of the Holy Spirit in the person praying for you also comes to you. It’s like igniting a candle with another candle. Moses was used to ignite 70 spiritual candles. This is a good motivation to church leaders to have as many people filled with the Holy Spirit as possible within the church to make the work of God easier. If it’s in marriage where one of the spouse is not filled with the Holy Spirit, we need to do the same. Bring them to the presence of God and pray for them or with them so that they can receive the Holy Spirit and this will then help share spiritual burdens together just like Moses did with the seventy elders. It’s also good to know that nobody that has the Spirit of God in them will continue in habitual sin. If you come across such a person be cautious in how you interact with them because they are under a spiritual bondage and operating through an unclean spirit. The Spirit of God is Holy and frees us from all habitual sins.
2 Corinthians 3:17 For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Spiritual Jealousy and pride also prevents many people from praying for others to receive God’s gifts. When they do it, they do it for show or for financial gain.
The bible says in Mathew 10:8 ….Freely you have received; freely give.
Those who have an unclean spirit, will be driven by this spirit to fake God’s gifts in order to intimidate, make others feel guilty and inferior for easy manipulation
If you ever feel intimidated in a company of some people, be assured that they are not operating under the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is gentle like a dove and He doesn’t intimidate or manipulate, He shows love and convicts us of our sins in a way that leads to repentance but not anger and rebellion like in intimidation.
2. Samson operating under the Holy Spirit
Judges 14:6 The Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done
3. King Soul and King David.
David receives the Holy Spirit, and at the same time, the Holy Spirit departs from Soul due to his rebellion.
I am now losing count of persons I have encountered who are operating under unclean spirits but while still thinking that they are servants of God. King soul was under the same idea. If you read more on this king you will find that he had no respect for anything sacred, he became the enemy of the Godly, just like many people at work in the church who are serving satan and themselves.
1 samuel 16:13-14 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah. Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.
4. Prophet Elisha gets the Holy Spirit of God through Elijah, another example of a spiritual candle lighting another spiritual candle
2 Kings2:13-15 Elisha then picked up Elijah’s cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. He took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and struck the water with it. “Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over. The company of the prophets from Jericho, who were watching, said, “The spirit of Elijah is resting on Elisha.” And they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.
5. John the Baptist was filled in the womb
Luke 1:15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb
The disciples filled with the Holy Spirit
Without the Holy Spirit, the disciples could do nothing, so when Jesus was crucified, they ran away and went back to fishing In John 21
After Jesus died and resurrected, the disciples went about their lives and returned to what they new best which was fishing. Jesus appeared to them several times but told them to wait in Jerusalem until they receive power. He knew they could not withstand satan’s schemes with only what they have learnt when he was with them. They needed a Helper and that is the Holy Spirit
Luke 24:49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
After being filled with the Holy Spirit, the disciples now had power to withstand opposition
In the scripture below, we see Peter on fire after being filled with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:40-41 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptised, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
The Holy Spirit is a promise to all people
Joel 2:28 And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Jesus promises the Holy Spirit as Our Helper because we can do nothing without Him. He is now not for the chosen few but for all believers. It may not be as dramatic as it was during Pentecost but you will surely be overwhelmed by a divine indescribable peace when the filling happens
John 14:16-17 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth…”
We all have the right to be filled with the Holy Spirit. You only need to be in the presence of God, open your mouth and drink-in the Holy Spirit. God is more than willing to fill you.
The filling of the Holy Spirit gives you two things; the FRUITS and the GIFTS.
The fruits of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit gives us the FRUITS for a pleasant interaction with others. When you are displaying the fruits you will make other people happy by your presence alone and that gives you favour with man.
Remember that the devil will try to interfere with the fruits so that you don’t make a positive impact in your environment through unpleasantness like anger and other emotional sins
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
The GIFTS of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit gives you the GIFTS to help you overcome the work of satan in your life and the life of others around you. There is more personal victory over temptations and spiritual exploits in the life of a believer who has the gifts than the one who doesn’t .
The devil again will try to interfere or prevent you from receiving your gifts through your attitude of either fear, pride, jealousy because others have the gifts or you want to get the gifts for monetary gain. These gifts are free. We have freely received we need to put the gift in action freely (Mathew 10:8 Freely you have received; freely give)
1 Corinthians 12: 7 The Holy Spirit displays God’s power through each of us as a means of helping the entire church. 8 To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; someone else may be especially good at studying and teaching, and this is his gift from the same Spirit. 9 He gives special faith to another, and to someone else the power to heal the sick. 10 He gives power for doing miracles to some, and to others power to prophesy and preach. He gives someone else the power to know whether evil spirits are speaking through those who claim to be giving God’s messages—or whether it is really the Spirit of God who is speaking. Still another person is able to speak in languages he never learned; and others, who do not know the language either, are given power to understand what he is saying. 11 It is the same and only Holy Spirit who gives all these gifts and powers, deciding which each one of us should have.
Prepare to manifest fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit
- Accepting Jesus in your heart is the first step
- Believe that you have also received the Holy Spirit in your heart
- Do you need deliverance? This may hinder the fruits and the gifts. If you have some deliverance issues like habitual sins that are following you and you can’t shake them off. Please seek further help before you grief the Holy Spirit . If you were once involved in a false religion, human traditions or occult, this is idolatry and God hates idolatry, be prepared to get rid of any physical items in your possession such as ornaments like rings, bungles, necklace or clothing. Burn or destroy them whichever is easier for you. Renounce any vows you made that binds you to any of these acts of idolatry. Seek deliverance or prayers for generational sins known or unknown.
- Cloth yourself with a repentant attitude not a holy than thou attitude towards yourself and others
- Spend some quiet time with God in private every day praying in spirit and in truth. Sometimes you don’t even need to pray just be there focusing on His love for you. Fight all other thoughts that come at this time. It’s hard at the beginning but after a few days you will learn to spend quality time with your creator.
- Open your mouth and pray what comes from your heart during this time. You will find yourself speaking in some language you don’t understand. Don’t suppress it just pray. You will get a few words in the beginning but more words in future as you grow more in God’s word
You will know when the Holy Spirit is in you because He will overshadow you with His love and peace.
Remember, because you don’t speak in tongues does not necessarily mean that you have not received the Holy Spirit. It just means the manifestation has not come out yet or it may have come out but you have not spoken.
Some people will start speaking in tongues once they are in the right environment in a prayer meeting where people are worshipping God in spirit and in truth.
Just like a small kid who is about to talk. They talk because they hear other people talking. Then they join in unconsciously. Same thing with people who start speaking in tongues for the first time. Don’t try to learn from others (that is faking and it belongs to the children of satan), just open your mouth and pray in your language, the other language will come automatically at its own time.
Are you born again, you think that you are spirit filled but still in a lot of emotional issues? The problem is more likely your rebellion Click here
